UMK3 Arcade Console

A few years ago, Shock put together a Mortal Kombat SuperGun / MiniGun with Jose Cruz and others in the RBG community. Going back decades, the Capcom community and others have been using various modified casings, eg: connect CPS2 boards to a Sony Playstation as a SuperGun. Over the years, this has gotten way more customized and advanced.

For a short time early on, we used Playstation for MK Trilogy, then MAME for years, XBOX 360 UMK3, PSN MKII, MK Arcade Kollection. Now, many will consider MK Legacy Kollection to run events due to how simple it will be and what should be faithful ports of the games.

Well, there’s a way to go expensive and complicated, creating the best performance and accessibility to players, a MiniGun Jamma breakout box connected to a real arcade board. It’s possible for any game, but the MK series has always been overlooked by the gaming community at large in terms of legacy support.

This combo of tech with USB adapters like “Undamned” allows players to use a multitude of controllers on real hardware, no lag, on a CRT Television. We’ve modded arcade machines directly in the past to achieve a similar result, but we were limited to PS1/2 input devices or manually customized inputs like RJ-45 ethernet. It’s just amazing how much you can do to get things to work.

The reactions from players who’ve never gotten to experience the arcade response is always “I never knew there was this much of a difference” or something similar. There are a few of these for various arcade MK games out there now, and it would be great to create a fleet of totally optimized setups to supplement events.
